Housebuilder helps people affected by dementia to stay connected

An East Midlands-based charity supporting people living with dementia through the pandemic has received £1,000 donation to help its new Welfare Calls telephone service.

Alzheimer’s Society has received the funds from Persimmon Homes Nottingham, as part of its Community Champion initiative.

Alzheimer’s Society has had to adapt the ways in which it works, due to Covid-19, with its face-to-face services being replaced with a personalised telephone support service.

The charity is making regular calls to ensure individuals’ wellbeing and offer advice or signposting to further assistance. Persimmon’s donation will fund approximately 100 ‘Welfare Calls’ calls from Alzheimer’s Society’s trained staff to vulnerable residents in need of support.

Olly Larkin, from Alzheimer’s Society East Midlands, said: “We are so grateful to Persimmon Homes for this wonderful donation. Living with dementia, at any time, brings everyday challenges for the person and those around them while the coronavirus has made daily life that much harder. In Nottinghamshire, there are approximately 11,000 people with dementia.”

“Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Alzheimer’s Society has temporarily replaced face-to-face and group services with more online and telephone support which includes the introduction of Welfare Calls, where our trained staff check on people affected by dementia and offer information and advice. We’re still here for people affected by dementia through our Dementia Connect support line – 0333 150 3456.”

Neil Follows, managing director for Persimmon Homes Nottingham, said: “The Community Champions match-funding initiative seeks to support grassroots groups and charities in areas where the company is building.

“We’re delighted to be supporting such a valuable charity during these challenging times.”

Persimmon Homes Nottingham makes two donations of up to £1,000 every month. The online application form can be found at www.persimmonhomes.com/charity
