Unlike some markets around the country that have closed since the Covid-19 restrictions began in March, Newark Market has continued — but it has had to adapt to ensure its continuing viability and to keep the public and traders as safe as possible.
Ian Harrison, markets manager for Newark Town Council, said: “We wanted to continue to serve our regular customers with essential foods, if it was safe to do so, and the Government guidance allowed us to do that with social distancing measures, signage, use of cashless machines etc.
“During lockdown the footfall increased dramatically, so much so, we had to limit queues.
“It became apparent very quickly that many people preferred to shop in the outdoors and used the market, possibly for the first time.
“Fortunately many of those new customers have stayed with us and in addition to new customers we have attracted new traders from across the region, so whilst the pandemic has been tragic for so many, it has actually given us an opportunity to grow.
“We were keen to look after long-standing customers who were self-isolating or shielding, so we provided a delivery service to these and since April have made over 550 deliveries.
“Whilst many people have now been able to come out of their homes again, we have decided to trial the continuation of the delivery service but to make it available now to all customers who live within four miles of the market.
“A minimum order value of £15 will apply for each delivery. Deliveries are on a Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and orders can be taken the previous day by sending an order to David.jackson@newark.gov.uk or leave a message on 01636 681495. Goods available include fresh fruit and vegetables, breads, cakes and flour, specialist cheeses, fish including sushi and tuna, and meats.”
The Town Council is continuing to plan for its Annual Christmas Market on 12th and 13th December, subject to government guidance at the time.
Given the loss of income to local charities during lockdown, the council is also encouraging them to take up offers to stand on specific charity stalls that will be provided for each market.
