Celebrating big birthday in hospital operating theatre

Posted onPosted on 25th Sep

The Theatres team at Newark Hospital took a few minutes out from their busy surgery list to help a patient celebrate their 101st birthday.

Eileen Milner, who was at Newark Hospital for a minor operation, turned 101 on Saturday, 23rd September.

Consultant plastic surgeon Ciaran O’Boyle surprised Eileen with a cake as members of the Theatres team sang Happy Birthday.

The cake’s candles remained unlit to avoid setting off the hospital smoke alarms!

Eileen, of Claypole, was referred to Newark Hospital by her GP. She was accompanied to her appointment two days before her birthday by her son, James Milner, who said: “You don’t normally go to hospital for cake. It was a very nice thought, and she had no idea it was planned — she was delighted.”

Speaking about Eileen’s experience at Newark Hospital, James said: “Everything went to plan and we hope she will get better soon.

“Mum was very happy with her treatment and care, and we certainly enjoyed the cake!”

When asked what the secret was to his mother’s longevity, James added: “I don’t know. I think she’d say it’s about keeping mentally active, and physically active, if you can, but don’t overdo it.”

David Ainsworth, director for Strategy and Partnerships at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, which oversees the trust’s running of Newark Hospital, added: “These lovely photographs really pulled on my heartstrings.

“It’s a great example of how our colleagues go the extra mile for our patients, and for each other.

“We want more people to be like Eileen and receive their treatment at Newark Hospital.

“With an ever-increasing range of outpatient appointments, procedures and operations available at Newark, don’t forget to ‘Ask for Newark’ when being referred by your GP and find out if you can have your treatment at Newark Hospital.”
